Dividend Income Report – February 2020

By | March 4, 2020
stock market comeback

Two months down, ten months to go. February was a pivotal month. I sold all my stocks as indicated in my market timing post. Currently, I’m not in the stock market. Thankfully, I got out right before the big drop in the markets. I didn’t have a crystal ball. It was pure luck, and arguably, the longer I stayed in the stock market, the more it felt like gambling, because I needed the money in a matter of two-to-three months. Conventional wisdom says that if you need the money short term, it shouldn’t be invested in the stock market. After I close on the condo, I will start to rebuild my portfolio in earnest.

This post is a bit late. Work has been crazy, but better late than never. So now, let’s see how much dividends I earned in February 2020.

Dividend Income

In February, I received a total of $7.49 in dividends broken down as follows:

NO.STOCKNAMEDIVIDENDS
1AAPLApple$0.44
2ABBVAbbvie$1.88
3GISGeneral Mills$1.17
4HRLHormel Foods$0.70
5ORealty Income$0.36
6PGProctor & Gamble$0.64
7SBUXStarbucks$0.49
8TAT&T$1.81
$7.49

Well, as I indicated above, I sold ALL my stocks. So, the dividends I earned may very well be close to zero in the next quarter. Because I will start investing in the stock market again this month, my dividend portfolio will essentially start over from scratch. The stocks in my portfolio will remain the same. But I will begin dollar cost averaging into the portfolio anew with M1 Finance as my likely broker.

That being said, although I will start off small, I should be ending the year fairly strong in terms of monthly contributions. I fully expect to rebuild my portfolio at a faster rate than I did before. Wish me luck.

Annual Income

Here is a graphical representation of the dividends earned in February in relation to the dividends earned in previous years.

Here is the raw data:

MONTH2017201820192020Rate
January$0.00 $14.93 $37.54 $2.22 -94.09%
February$0.00 $77.66 $141.16 $7.49 -94.69%
March$0.00 $72.93 $136.45
April$0.41 $31.47 $55.39
May$2.85 $79.33 $142.69
June$16.89 $98.51 $160.47
July$5.99 $42.32 $59.68
August$21.95 $108.44 $147.73
September$28.72 $111.15 $151.66
October$23.21 $48.09 $3.00
November$62.11 $124.92 $7.18
December$76.51 $140.24 $116.51

As you can see, I earned a whopping NEGATIVE 94.69% of dividends as compared to last year. The good news is that when I start rebuilding my portfolio, the percentage increase is going to be EPIC.

Forward Annual Dividends

At the time of this writing, my forward annual dividends is $0.00. With my next monthly report, you will start to see some cents on the board – maybe even a few dollars. But as the months go by, I hope to break triple-digits once again.

Conclusion

February’s dividend income earned reflected the last remaining holdouts of the shares I owned in the stock market. Because I was losing sleep over whether my stocks would go up or down the next day, I decided to sell my stocks. I’d rather miss out on returns than lose the money I needed for closing costs.

I can’t change the past, but I am slowly laying the foundation to start rebuilding my dividend portfolio stronger and faster than I ever had before.

I think your decision to pull out of the market was different than a long term investors decision to try and time the market. You invested cash that had a short term need. IF this was causing you more stress, than it wasn’t worth it. Fortunately, for you, the timing worked out here. And I’m happy that you understand that timing the market can be a boom or bust strategy.

Hopefully you can get back into the market soon.

Hey Bert, thanks for the comment. I am working to get back in the market as early as this month. Granted, it might be with $50, but I expect that to grow that amount throughout the rest of the year. I think this was a good experience to go through for more reasons than one.

Thanks. I’ve slowly gotten back in the market and I’m trying to dump as much money as I can. It’s going to be a while but I can’t wait to see future growths.
